I'm a bit late posting this here and it isn't news about Hope specifically but it is BIG news when it comes to POL.
POL has been around as an Ultima Online(R) emulator since about 1998. That's a very long time in "computer years". And for all that time it has been and was expected to be a closed source software. However, recently the developers have been hinting at it going open source. Well, the POL forums now contain a
post verifying this.
Some of you might be wondering what I mean by "open source" and "closed source".
Most software today is written in a
high level language, the source code, that has human readable commands that get converted (compiled) into machine readable code that the computer's central processing unit (CPU) can understand. For the most part this source code is kept private by the software author(s). Some time ago a new idea was set in motion whereby the source code for programs would be made freely available for everyone to see and use to compile their own version of whatever the code was written to do. It is believed by many, and I am one of them, that Linus Torvold(sp?), the creator of Linux, was the first to push this idea into the mainstream. Anyway, this idea of opening up the source code for all to see and make their own contributions has revolutionized the development of many programs. There are thousands of Open Source projects on the Internet and many of them would not be where they are today if they had remained closed source.
So, it is the hope of the POL community that making POL Open Source will spur its development and growth.
